In 1870, Frederick Post, a German immigrant and founder, first claimed this area as the location of a water-powered lumber mill. A treaty was later negotiated with Chief Andrew Seltice of the CDA Indian Tribe. This land cession was recorded on a noticeable rock near the falls. The contract is well-preserved for exhibition on a 4-acre site found north of Falls Park.
