The Village at Riverstone

Riverstone

It all started during the 1800’s when a British company known as the Northwest Fur Trading Company visited the area. They set up fur trading posts along the Inland area. One of these posts was known as Kullyspell House, which was set along the shore of Lake Pend OReille. At the time, many French-speaking traders were spending time in the area. This is when the word “Coeur d’Alene” came to the forefront, which was a nickname for the Schitsu-umsh people trading at the spot. To further break down this term, “Coeur” refers to heart, while “Alene” refers to awl (sharp tool for piercing leather). These words were used because the traders were sharp and had heart. Over time, the region took on the nickname.
